Quantum Models of Cognition and Decision

This tutorial is an exposition of a rapidly growing new alternative approach to building computational models of cognition and decision based on quantum theory. It will provide an exposition of the basic assumptions of classical versus quantum theories by reviewing these assumptions, side-by-side, in a parallel and elementary manner. We will show that quantum theory provides a unified and powerful explanation for a wide variety of paradoxes found in human cognition and decision ranging from attitude, inference, causal reasoning, judgment and decision, and memory. Computer programs for computing model predictions are described and made available.  No previous experience or background with quantum theory will be assumed. Statistics as pottery: Bayesian Data Analysis using Probabilistic Programs

Probability theory is the logic of science (Jaynes, 2003) and Bayesian data analysis (BDA) is the glue that brings that logic to data. BDA is a general, flexible alternative to standard statistical approaches (e.g., Null Hypothesis Significance Testing) that provides the scientist with clarity and ease to address their personal scientific questions. Doing BDA in a probabilistic programming language (PPL) affords additional advantages: a compositional approach to writing models, separation of model specification from algorithmic implementation (a la lm() in R), and continuity from articulating data analytic models to formalizing Bayesian cognitive models. Furthermore, specifying one’s model and data analysis in a PPL allows you to search for “optimal experiments” for free. This tutorial will walk the participant through the basics of BDA to state-of-the-art applications, using an interactive online web-book and tools for integrating BDA into their existing workflow. Mixed Models in R – An Applied Introduction

Mixed models are a generalization of ordinary regression models that explicitly capture dependencies among related data points via random-effects parameters. Such dependencies are ubiquitous in cognitive science due to collecting more than one data point from the same participant and/or from the same item. Compared to traditional analyses approaches that ignore these dependencies, mixed models provide more accurate (and generalizable) estimates, improved statistical power, and non-inflated Type I errors. The tutorial will introduce the functionality of lme4, the gold standard for estimating mixed models in R. In addition, it will introduce the functionality of afex, which simplifies many aspects of using lme4, such as the calculation of p-values for mixed models. The tutorial also introduces basic knowledge in statistical modeling with R that is necessary for competently using mixed models. Attendants are expected to have some basic knowledge of R.

A behavioral measure of mindfulness for local and online data collection

Research involving mindfulness has typically relied on self-report measures that are often inconsistent across studies. This tutorial aims to address this limitation by introducing attendees to breath counting, a mindfulness technique that offers a behavioral means of objectively tracking the duration and approximate quality of individual mindfulness sessions. Intended for a broad audience, this tutorial will review the basics of mindfulness practice before providing attendees with the knowledge, skills, and tools required to implement breath-counting methodology in their own research. Attendees will become familiar with the basics of jsPsych—a JavaScript library for browser-based behavioral experiments—by learning how to both (1) use ready-made scripts for breath-counting experiments and (2) easily modify those scripts to create customized experiments that can be run either locally or remotely.

(NSF Sponsored) Scalable infrastructure for computationally-intensive cognitive neuroscience

In this age of big data, cognitive neuroscience increasingly relies on computationally intensive analyses that are difficult or impossible to complete on even the most powerful stand-alone workstations. State of the art methods for analysis of neural data–including multivariate pattern analysis, network discovery, structural imaging, MEG/EEG time-series analysis, and ECog–are now often run on computing infrastructures that leverage massive parallelism and/or very fast communication between memory and processor. This full-day tutorial will introduce participants to the variety of computing infrastructures available for this kind of science, indicate which infrastructures are suited to which kinds of problems, show some examples of the kinds of results that can follow, and provide hands-on experience accessing and deploying these tools. Instruction will include overviews of large-scale computing modes and common infrastructures that support them, including nationally-available infrastructures in the United States. Hands-on exercises will include an introduction to the command-line (a common interface to cluster-type computing resources) and the execution of neuroscience-relevant examples on freely-available resources, including the Open Science Grid (OSG) and the Neuroscience Gateway (NSG). Attendees will engage in multiple hands-on exercises via their own laptops and will be encouraged to work with one another to maximize learning. We will also cover mechanisms by which attendees can continue to take advantage of these resources after the workshop, as well as how they might leverage computational resources at their own institutions. Best practices presented in the workshop will coordinate with material presented in a conference symposium on Saturday afternoon based upon outcomes of the NeuroComp17 workshop (NSF 1649759,  neuro). Learning materials will be based in part on support efforts from UW-Madison’s Center for High Throughput Computing (CHTC), the Open Science Grid (OSG), and the Neuroscience Gateway (NSG).
